CHAPTER NINETEEN

Emily

I flop down on my bed, giving myself a breather. I jinxed myself last night when I told Cole the Calpol would keep Poppy asleep. She didn’t sleep longer than thirty minutes before she was up again for an hour or two. She’s no better today, and because she’s hungry, it’s making her grumpier. Her temperature has gone down, which is a good sign because it means she can finally get the sleep she needs. It’s what she is doing right now and has been doing for the last hour.

She isn’t why I need a breather though. Something between me and Cole changed last night, and I don’t know what. He’s been in my space all morning, and I don’t think I’m imagining it. I want to talk to the girls and get their opinion, but I’m waiting for them to arrive. When they heard Ben would be acting as a bodyguard, they all dropped their plans and told me they’d be here. Gabby doesn’t believe he can protect us and is determined to prove it. How, I don’t know, but it’s Gabby so she could do anything.

Waiting an hour for them to arrive hasn’t helped the dilemma I’m in right now though. Even with Ben here as a buffer, it hasn’t stopped Cole from driving me crazy. He found every excuse to touch me, which had been the same all morning too. At first, I thought they were accidental touches, but then it continued. Every accidental touch, every brush of his hand or every time our gazes met, it sent me to mush. I can handle the touches, but there’s something about his gaze locking onto mine that has butterflies fluttering in my stomach. It’s like he can see the good, the bad, and every sinful, erotic thought that crosses my mind.

I don’t know how to feel because I’m not sure if I’m imagining it. It could be years of pent-up sexual frustration.

There is also the fact he’s Poppy’s dad. The same guy who only a week ago took us from our home after threatening to take Poppy from me. He said some really shitty things; things that must have had a little bit of truth behind them otherwise they would never had reached his mind.

And then there’s the fact his brother is a homicidal maniac.

My phone alerts me to someone pressing the buzzer, and thinking it’s my friends, I buzz them in and slide out of bed. I don’t know where Cole or Ben are, so they might not get the door. I grab the baby monitor off the side and head downstairs.

The house is quiet, and I don’t hear any signs of Cole or Ben, which means they’re probably downstairs in the office. I also don’t hear my girls, which is surprising since none of us do quiet. I’m lucky Poppy adjusted to us talking and laughing, and normally sleeps better because of it. Since she’s ill, that won’t be the same, but there’s a bit of distance between us since I plan for us to go sit in the big living room.
